People all over the world regard their animals as family members. They could keep small creatures, or 100 pound Labs. These pets can expect the same treatment as their human companions; even down to their pet insurance.

Pet health insurance is one of the fastest growing lines of insurance offered today. This market is expected to top $1 billion dollars by 2011. Jack Stephens, founder of Pet's Best Insurance, pet health care costs have soared over 40% in the last to years totaling $10 billion dollars. Only about $250 million of this however was spent on health insurance.

A pet insurance plan is very similar to one you might have. They can cover any sort of animal, but are generally taken out for dogs and cats. The policies vary in their costs and coverages, and can be as simple or as inclusive as you need.

Like all insurance plans, you always hope you don't need the coverage. But often when dealing with animals, the need is sudden. And, if surgery or emergency treatment is needed, the cost can often soar into the thousands of dollars. Even purebred or pedigreed animals aren't safe from this fact, and they often have more genetic troubles.

In recent months, the ASPCA has noticed a significant increase in the number of people calling it who simply cannot afford the routine health care that their animal requires.

In general, pet insurance covers veterinary bills arising from injuries and illnesses up to certain limits, as well as third-party liability cover in case an owner becomes liable for damage caused by his or her pet.

These plans also cover micro chipping to help locate a lost pet and some will even cover the cost of advertising and rewards to help locate your lost pet. Some even offer travel reimbursement if a trip is cut short due to a pet related cancellation.

This makes it important not to shop on price alone. How would you feel denying your pet a life saving procedure knowing that it saved you $1 a month?

These pet care plans are becoming much more common. This helps all owners feel comfortable knowing that their pets will be taken care of without causing undue financial stress on the family.

Making the life altering choice between euthanasia and an expensive medical treatment is never easy. According to Wallace Sife, who has counseled hundreds of guilt filled pet owners as founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement, "There is no right answer."

While a pet insurance plan won't spare you from the emotional hardship of a pet needing urgent care, it can free you from worrying about the financial stress, and hopefully help you make a better decision.

These are the basics behind this issue, and it is important to do your research so you know exactly what you are covered for and how much this will cost. A simple internet search should yield a variety of insurance providers, and you should compare their websites to see which gives you the best deal. Do not just go for the cheapest option - make sure that your pet is covered so that you will be prepared and looked after if anything does go wrong with their health.
