Families who have changes in financial circumstances or living arrangements may find themselves unable to care for their cats. Some cats may have behavior problems or health problems for which the family feels unable to handle.

A member of the family may have developed an allergy to cats. At times, a litter of kittens is surrendered due to the familys neglect of having the cats fixed and a lack of ability or willingness to care for the litter of kittens.

These homeless cats are often surrendered to animal shelters or cat rescue homes. A majority of pets are surrendered to rescue groups and shelters due to changes in the family and not due to problems with the pets.

Animal shelters are often overwhelmed with the care for numerous surrendered animals. Cat rescue homes are an alternative to traditional animal shelters. Cat rescue homes and foster homes care for the cat until a permanent home can be found.

Many animal shelters rely on fosterers to care for some of the animals in their homes. A cat foster home can provide a cat with a more natural, family setting with social interaction until a permanent home is found.

Many people become fosterers for different reasons. They may have a desire to feel needed by the fostered pets or are proud to be a part of animal rescue efforts. Fosterers often receive benefits directly from the pets in their care in the form of companionship and affection.

People may not realize that they can become fosterers. If the person has financial concerns in caring for cats, the potential fosterer should know that the animal shelter may cover many cat care costs. Many animal shelters cover any veterinary expenses.

If someone is interested in learning more about becoming a fosterer, the person should contact the local animal shelter for information. Animal shelters have rules and requirements to be sure that the foster home will provide adequate care for the fostered animals. Many animal shelters will do what they can to help interested people meet the requirements to become fosterers.
