Why I Bought The Kindle 2

Amazon's latest version of their ebook reader is the Kindle 2. Many improvements have been made from the Kindle 1. The most important ones in my opinion are longer battery life, more storage space for books, and the thickness.

There are many other nice new features on the Kindle 2 that you might not be aware of. Here are some of the reasons that I purchased the new Kindle.

The keyboard on the new Kindle is one of my favorite improvements. It has a very nice QWERTY keyboard now and the position of the keys has been greatly improved. This makes any typing much easier than on the Kindle 1.

On the original Kindle navigation was done by just using a scroll bar which made it somewhat difficult to get around the screen. With the 5 way joystick on the Kindle 2 you can get anywhere on the screen without much trouble at all.

Although the Kindle 2 does not have an SD card slot like the Kindle 1 it has much more storage capability. It holds over 1,500 books right on the device itself so there really isn't much need for an SD card slot.

I'm still waiting for Amazon to come out with color technology on the Kindle but at least we now have 16 shades of gray as opposed to only 4 shades on the Kindle 1. Since there aren't really a lot of pictures to look at while reading paperbacks this isn't really too big of a deal to me but it's still nice having more shades of gray.

The buttons to go to the next page are in a much better area now. The original Kindle had buttons that went along almost the whole side of the Kindle which made accidental page turns very easy and also very annoying.

The new Kindle is even thinner than the Kindle 1 which was pretty thin itself. It is now about 1/3 of an inch thick and it still weighs less than most paperback books.

You can read for a few days on a single charge. The battery life is about 25% longer than with the original Kindle. If you remember to turn off the wireless feature when not using your Kindle 2, you can make the charge last even longer, over one week.

One of my favorite new features on the Kindle 2 is the experimental Text-to-Speech feature. Although I don't use it a lot it does come in handy if my hands are tied up and I want to continue with the story that I've been reading.

These are just a few of the reasons that I ended up buying the Kindle 2 even though I already had the Kindle 1. I wasnt sure if it was going to be worth the price when I first bought it but now Im very happy with my purchase and if youre an avid reader like me Im sure youll love the Kindle 2 also.
