No custom helps in expressing human feelings in a more effective manner than giving flowers or bouquets. Flowers and bouquets have acted as great gifts for birthdays and anniversaries, and are also helpful in making personal gestures like communicating warmest congratulations, making apologies or cheering someone up.

It is believed that this tradition has roots in prehistoric traditions whose conclusive proof has been dug up by excavators at archaeological sites. History, legends and folklore going back to ancient China, Greece, Rome and Egypt display flowers to be an integral part of social rituals. Giving flowers was considered the best means to communicate one's thoughts in these civilizations. The ancient Greeks even believed some flowers to be related to divinity.

The Middle Ages saw a continuation of this custom, and France and England were mainly responsible for carrying this tradition down the ages. Today as we have given meaning to each flower, we are in fact continuing an ancient Turkish custom brought into Europe by the French and the British.

Flower giving acquired much prevalence among the Victorians who greatly indulged in this custom. As blatant expression of emotions was frowned upon during the Victorian period, the genteel Victorians practised excellent restraint in language and they balanced this control over language by their gesture of presenting flowers to communicate emotions.

The present rules of gifting flowers or bouquets were laid down during this era. For instance, if you bought a beautiful bouquet of red roses from the florist and gave it to your beloved upside down, she will surely be angry with you. Red roses, that otherwise depict love, can symbolize anger if gifted upside down. In fact, a large number of books were written and disseminated on the language of flowers in the'th century.

This custom continues even today, where people gift flowers to others to express their sentiments. Through constant changes over the years, we have reached a stage where many flowers now have some meaning and giving flowers or bouquets has to be done according to certain rules and regulations. Gifting a bouquet of red roses is believed to be an expression of love, whereas lilies are seen as symbolizing beauty and purity. A lone marigold flower is regarded as an expression of sorrow, on the other hand friendship is best exhibited by a yellow coloured rose.

Flower giving history keeps on to be written. In some countries, it might have once seemed improper for a woman to give flowers to a man. Now, it is very ordinary. Virtual flowers and Internet florists allow new means to deliver virtual or real flowers anyplace in the earth. Technological and scientific improvements allow for year-round blooming of every type of flower.

Science today has enabled us to grow all kinds of flowers anywhere in the world. Any good Singapore flower shop will offer a multitude of flower varieties that are both local and exotic in nature, and are appropriate for expressing your heartfelt feelings in the classiest manner.
