Model train scenery is the artistic outlet most associated with model railroading. This allows you complete creative freedom when setting up your layout. Whether you are recreating an historic landscape, the town you live in, or an area of countryside or city of your own design, there are many products out there to help you with this.

If you have been to a hobby shop or looked online, you know that there are a lot of pre-fabricated backgrounds and sceneries that you can buy. While they are a good place to start, you don't have to use only that. After all, that same backdrop is going to be on someone else's train set as well. You are going to want to spice it up a bit to make it your own.

When you first get ready to shop for your scenery, you need to know what scale your model trains are. There are four scales to choose from and like the trains, the scenery is done to the same sizes. It would look pretty funny for a G scale train to have N scale scenery around the track.

For the novice model railroader, budget may be a concern when starting out and buying a basic starter kit is a good beginning. There are many resources out to help you build your own model train scenery from items around your home or the local department or craft store. Websites, books and DVDs are readily available to help you as well.

For the expert model railroader, there is always the need to add that next little piece to enhance what has already become a monument to your own creativity. A tree here, a boulder there, it seems to be never ending. Each time you look at your layout there appears to be something missing. Doing these little additions yourself not only adds to the overall effect, but allows you to do so without waiting for an order to be shipped and arrive.

Rest assured that there is no perfect or imperfect design. If you make something and it meets your approval, then you have done a great job. If you don't like it, get rid of it and put something else in there. You can do whatever you want, it's your set.

Now that you have been run through the gauntlet of model train scenery, it is time for your creative juices to start to flow. Buy scenery if you can, create it if you must, but get that track decorated to create a dazzling scene. There is no need to have your train rolling over a plain ping pong table as long as there is grass in the yard and trees in the park. Get creative and you will be surprised at what you come up with.
