Too many woodworking beginners start out with projects that are just too big for them. Some of these designs will show serious imperfections and appear inferior in quality. Even some so-called simple woodworking creations may not be so easy if they're too big or require many tools. By beginning with a manageable project, the beginner can build skill before moving on to a new task. Your projects can become increasingly challenging as you become more experienced. And so until that time, it's wise to work on smaller woodwork projects.

One woodworking project that you might want to think about starting with is a small bookshelf. While it doesn't require great expertise to build, it will permit you to develop your woodworking skills. Small birdhouses are very practical and simple to make, giving them a qualification as a great project for novices. If a birdhouse does not appeal to you, perhaps you may want to make a magazine rack or a memo box.

Make certain you have all the supplies necessary for your woodworking project before you begin it. The first step that you need to take is to develop the plans for the project you want to start. Project plans can be purchased from home improvement shops, located in books and magazines on woodworking, and downloaded online. While some plans can be downloaded at a cost, there are several that can be obtained on the web at no cost. You will notice that most plans will include a list of necessary supplies and precise directions on methods for finishing the project from start to end. If you need pictures and written guides to follow, they are almost always in the directions enclosed.

Several basic woodworking projects use no more than a chisel and a hammer. With these basic tools, you'll find that you can produce a large number of things. And the skills you'll learn with them will serve you nicely even after you've outgrown basic wood projects and begun to work on more complicated projects. Once you have developed your skills, you may want to invest in advanced tools that allow you to refine the details of your work.

There are many different types of wood, some of which are simpler to work with than others. Don't complicate simple woodworking projects. Pine, plywood, and balsa wood are some of the more popular, manageable woodworking materials.

When you first start, a simple woodworking design is perfect so you can master the basics. You probably will not be designing top quality projects for some time, yet the skills you are learning now will be useful when you start working on larger projects.
