MMA is possibly one of the most brutal, but exciting sports around. For those of you who have never seen a Mixed Martial Arts fight, you can expect a mix of wrestling, boxing and martial arts unlike anything you've ever watched before. Here I'm going to take a look at the five pound-for-pound best ever MMA fighters.

#5 Chuck Liddell - Truly one of the first real legends of the sport. He's not exactly a pretty boy, but Liddell's UFC performances helped bring Mixed Martial Arts to mainstream attention. A monster of a man.

#4 Randy Couture - We're talking here about the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters ever. So the fact that the 45 year old Couture is not the same fighter he was 6 or 7 years ago is irrelevant. At his peak, he was a machine. Definitely deserves his place on this list.

#3 Anderson Silva - Even listing Anderson Silva at number three in this list could be controversial, considering that Sherdog rates him top pound-for-pound mixed martial artist. Whatever your thoughts, he has made the middleweight division his own and hasn't lost in nearly four years.

Knockouts against highly rated fighters like Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin just confirm what most MMA fans are saying : Anderson Silva is one of the very best fighters ever to have graced the sport.

#2 Georges St Pierre - St Pierre (or GSP as he is often called) has that rare combination of skills that means no part of his fighting style is weak. That's why he's the king of the welterweights and one of the best ever MMA fighters.

#1 Fedor Emelianenko - He's won thirty and lost one! With an impressive record of 30 wins and one loss, and that loss coming from an illegal elbow that made a cut so deep the fight had to be stopped, Fedor is really undefeated in the MMA.

He has won twice over Nogueira and has two wins on Mark Coleman, Mirko Cro Cop, Randleman and more. I can call Fedor the best of all time because he has faced the best and beat them, not many MMA fighters can make that claim and be right!

This is my list, and it may not suit your opinion, which is all good because there are so many great fighters out there that many had to be left out to make a list of only 5.

It did take quite a while to come up with this list and I keep crossing names out and adding them back in. I suspect that's why MMA has become such a success as a mainstream sport.
