The Favorites of the AFC East - The New England Patriots

The Patriots entered the 2009 NFL season as the hands-on favorite to win the AFC East. Having played some great football last season in the absence of Tom Brady, a team with Brady as its QB over Matt Cassel would be even better, right?

Many analysts have predicted a New England Patriots Super Bowl victory entering the season, as some new weapons in New England make the team even stronger in their minds than before. I guess time will tell.

Unfortunately, things haven't quite turned out this way during the first two weeks of the season. I guess it will take them some time to get it back and adjust to the changes.

The Patriots won their first game at home against the Bills, and after a shaky start, essentially looked like the team of old. Well, Tom Brady did when he took control in the final two minutes. The rest of the team, not so much!

Many expect Brady to be rusty and shows sign of being a rookie again. It isn't all about Tom Brady. The Patriots wide receivers must give Brady help and make plays and the offensive line must keep Brady upright and protected.

Brady threw together an efficient 2 minute drill in week 1 against Buffalo, and somehow, the Patriots came away with a win. It really didn't look like the Pats would pull it out, but I guess you can never count any team out with a healthy Tom Brady.

His week 2 effort wasn't nearly as effective. The Jets put Brady through his first game since 2005 without throwing a touchdown pass. It was also his first regular season loss since December, 2006. Brady looked like a rookie quarterback, while Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez looked as polished as Brady usually does.

One has to wonder if a year away from football brings on a little more rust than the football world is expecting. Week 3 for New England should be a telling one.
