There are a few alternative methods to unclog the kitchen sink, tub or shower drain. If you know these methods, you can save yourself from the costly visit to your local plumber. The methods are not very complicated as people think. You can conveniently use them at your home. You just need to follow the simple steps.

Mostly the drains at home are blocked with material such as food particles, hair, clips, toys etc. A very simple and effective solution is to use a chemical drain cleaner. Read the instructions on the bottle and put the mentioned quantity into the drain pipe, Wait for few minutes till it dissolves, leave it for sometime and then flush it running water.

Check the drain pop up stopper. At times there can be a problem with it also as hair and other debris can collect there. So, make sure that it is opening fully.

If there is no blockage in the drain pop up stopper, check the drain pipe for any clog. A plumber's snake can help you in removing one. Put it inside the drain and push it downwards and try removing the clog this way. You can also use a dry or a wet vacuum for this purpose as its suction power is really strong.

Another helpful plumbing tool is a plunger. First take out the sink strainer or the pop up stopper. Then put some water and put the plunger over the drain. Move it in to and fro with equal force in both the directions. Repeat this for some time till the clog becomes loose. After that you would be easily able to re move it.

After using a plunger or a vacuum, you should run a good flow of water into the drainpipe so that the clog could be washed completely out of the pipe.

Always remember, when you use a chemical to unclog the drain, do not forget to use eye protection and gloves for safety. Also, make sure whatever chemical product you use will not damage the plastic or rubber pieces in the pipes or the garbage disposal. When you are using a plunger, and you are unable to pull out the sink strainer or pop-up blocker, just make sure that it is open wide enough to use a plunger.

Hence, if you follow the above steps and the handy tips, you will find it very easy for you to unclog the kitchen sink, tub or the shower drain.
