Rumors have formed recently that make it appear to be further likely that LeBron James will be coming aboard with New York|the Knicks|the New York Knicks after this season.

When LeBron turns into a free agent in the summer of 2010, the Cleveland Cavaliers will end up in the best position to extend him. This is due to the Larry Bird rule, which lets a franchise to exceed the salary limit in order to sign their own free representative.

The Knicks will give James a big agreement, however they will not know how to give LeBron as the same amount as the Cavaliers. So they got resourceful in the Big Apple and came up with a way to circumvent that blasted salary cap.

The rumor is that the Knicks will not only give James a max deal, although moreover his very own cable channel. You see, the Knicks are owned by Cablevision, a cable TV giant.

LeBron would receive profits from the sponsors on his cable channel. According to NBA regulations, the team would not be allowed to arrange these endorsements/sponsors for LeBron; he would need to handle that on his own. But I think we might all acknowledge that LeBron possesses enough connections in the corporate sphere to make it happen.

The word is that the television network would broadcast reruns of Knicks games (where the rights belong to Cablevision), as well as other content about LeBron, the Knicks, and the NBA. Some are even predicting that Nike would hope to be drawn in and create their own TV series.

The big issue is whether the league would permit this. It appears to be to be fully within league regulations. The cable television network would be seen as a tangential benefit of playing in NY, similar to several other advertising perks that come from playing in a certain city. The income would be viewed as non-basketball related income.

This is a newborn and out of the ordinary twist in the LeBron-to-be-a-free agent chronicle. The broad consensus has been that Cleveland is leading the race. Possibly that is starting to change?
