Whenever you have a sport that combines a high intensity work out with lots of additional heavily padded equipment you're bound to get some deep sweat built up. Hockey is one of those sports that really makes you sweat and it is for this reason that it is incredibly important that after every hockey game or practice you play that you wash your hockey jerseys and your hockey equipment.

The first thing you're going to notice if you haven't washed your hockey jersey after playing a game or practicing in it is the smell. Hockey equipment and jerseys stink to high heaven because they've got all that gross bodily fluids (blood, sweat and tears) that your body produced during the course of the hockey game. Combine exercise with heat and cover up your skin with tons of padding and your going to have some seriously sweat drenched equipment. The bacteria in your sweat will fester and multiply and that's what causes the equipment to stink.

Bacteria bring strong foul odors but it also brings a dangerous element as well. Bacteria cause infections and some of the worst kinds of bacteria can grow in unwashed fabrics like hockey jerseys and hockey equipment. When you combine porous fabric with sweaty bodies you get a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. If you put on the pads after they've sat around harboring bacteria for a few days you run the risk of catching some serious skin infections. Play it safe and wash your equipment.

Hockey jerseys are bound to get a little beaten up over the course of the game so it is important to try and start each game off with the best possible conditions. By washing your jersey regularly you are ensuring that all of that dust and grime that builds up on the fabrics is removed. Without all of that dirt to muck up the jersey the fabrics will be far more resilient to punishment.

If you don't wash your hockey jersey for an extended period of time you're going to run into some kind of problem. Either your jersey is going to fall apart at the seams or your going to develop a seriously bad skin infection and then you're not going to be able to play. What's the point of owning a hockey jersey if you're not going to play in it?

To properly wash your hockey jerseys all you need to do is throw them into the washing machine on a gentle cold water cycle. You can even put them in with all of your t-shirts if you want to. Just make sure that after you wash them you hang them up to dry. Don't stick them in the dryer because that will shrink them. Always wash your jerseys after every play session to avoid any problems.
