Protect your health! Never start a lawn mower inside a garage or a in a garden shed. Remember that carbon monoxide is a by product of gasoline and is highly toxic. Start your mower in an open area where there is lots of fresh air. When refueling, always do it outdoors and with your engine turned off. Choose gasoline with at least 87 minimum octane.

Mow your loan when the grass is dry, and it is best to do it when there is plenty of daylight when vision is better. Always take extra care when approaching blind corners, bushes, trees or other objects that could obscure your view. It is best to cut just a third of your grasss length every time to keep your grass healthy. You can do this by adjusting your mowing deck. Turn your engine off when adjusting the deck.

Make a different pattern each time you cut your grass. You can go from south to north, east to west, or can even do it at angles. Doing this gives you a cleaner cut and prevents compacting of the soil with your mower wheels.

If you are cutting grass on a hill, mow across it when you are using a walk behind mower, mow across. Do not mow up and down and never pull the mower backwards towards your feet. When using a riding mower on a hill, do the opposite. Command your rig up and down the hill as mowing across would cause you to tip the rig.
