Choosing the Best Cat Litter Mat

The best cat litter mat is the one that your cat will actually walk on! If he does not then you have purchased the mat for no reason.

You have seen it before, again and again; your little feline is a big time digger. In fact, he seems to think he can make it to the other side of the globe. Where is he trying to go?

The litter eventually gets tracked all over you floor and carpet and who else knows where... and it is even worse with the fine types of litter.

You get out the broom or vacuum to clean up the mess and then several hours later it happens all over again! Frustration is the word that best describes what you may be feeling.

Our feline friends just naturally dig and cover up their excrement... some with more zeal than others.

The best way to keep your house from becoming beachfront property is to buy kitty a litter mat. A good one that he will not have problems using.

Their are two kinds of mats. One has a rough surface with little projections sticking out and the other is flat or even soft surfaced with no projections or ridges. This second type might even look like a regular bath rug!

The non textured is like a regular rug that you might even walk on barefooted. You need to be wary of the type with texture on it.

Some cats... and I say some in the most general sort of way will not like stepping on mats with ridges or bumps.

If you cannot imagine walking over the mat with your bare feet.. then your cat may not like it either.

A cats little paw pads are very sensitive to touch ( a lot like the soles of your bare feet) and quite a few may outright refuse to step on the mat upon exiting their litter box. Many might even go through the trouble of jumping their way out of the litter box to avoid stepping on the mat which will then scatter more litter around your home.

This is pretty aggravating.

This is not exactly what you had in mind when you purchased the mat did you? Luckily, not all cats are picky like this and will use the mat without problems. Hopefully your cat is one of those felines that does not care.

So, if your home is still looking like beach front property... your little kitty may be jumping over the mat to avoid walking on it.

Perform a little experiment and change the litter mat to a softer mat that you would not mind walking on barefoot. You might discover that kitty will like it if you like it too!
