Choosing a dog like the American Bandog Mastiff is one of those decisions that should be weighed carefully, as these are not small dogs. A hybrid dog, this is a cross between a Mastiff and the American Bulldog. While this creates a fantastic temperament, it also creates a large dog with the need for socialization and exercise. Males can weigh up to about 150 pounds while females weigh in around 90 to 100 pounds.

Unfortunately, there are those who have chosen this dog as a fighting dog due to its size, weight, and brute strength. The breeding has been carefully monitored among reputable breeders and there is no indication that these dogs are being bred to become aggressive. In fact, they start off with a fantastic personality. They are calm, docile creatures that crave your love and affection. That said, you can only imaging how cruel it is to turn these dogs into fighting dogs.

This is a dog that needs a good, strong, competent leader. If you prefer to allow your dog to take the leadership role, the American Bandog Mastiff is probably not the most appropriate dog for you. Your leadership will help him learn what you expect. Your leadership provides this dog with a sense of security, which helps them behave like angels when they are left alone.

Giving your American Bandog Mastiff mental challenges is important. He requires mental stimulation as well as physical stimulation. While they tend to be a bit of a lazy bones inside, take him out and he will be ready for anything. He loves to play, is easily socialized, and can play gently with children.

You really can't ignore the need for making sure these dogs are properly socialized. With proper socialization you can prevent dog aggression, which can happen to any unsocialized dog. Unfortunately, the size of these dogs makes the lack of socialization a serious safety hazard. Providing him with regular exercise and the ability to play with other dogs will provide him with the physical and emotional outlet he needs to be a good dog.

If you fail to provide social interaction, leadership, and stimulation for the American Bandog Mastiff you may end up with a pup who is extremely sensitive to being left alone. This means that he may tear your home apart while you are away. It also means that you can end up accidentally assisting him into becoming aggressive. First time dog owners tend to struggle with this breed while those who have owned and loved breeds like the German Shepherd, Pit Bull, Mastiff, and Rottweiler successfully are thrilled with the breed.

You will love their ability to be gentle, and their devotion to children is nearly unparalleled. Gentle behavior is in their nature when around a child or smaller animal. You may have to experience a little drooling with these guys, but it is not excessive.

If you're looking for a companion that can guard the family the America Bandog Mastiff is definitely a positive choice. He will protect you all with everything he has. While basic breed standards fit this profile, individual dogs should be taken on an individual basis.
