Many people each year need to apply for garden planning permission but for some buildings this is not necessary. Before you fill in the forms and apply read the below to see if this is actually required by law or not.

The entire cost of this could wrack up into the thousands of dollars so before signing anything or beginning any work ensure you understand exactly what is required for permissions and speak to your local authorities first.

The general rule is that if you are building a very large building or even a tall greenhouse or shed type building then it it highly likely that you will require garden planning permission. It is however not always based on the size of the building, and sometimes the purpose of its intended uses.

When it is a greenhouse for example that the planning permission is required for, if it is being built with the intention to grow and sell products from then your local authority will need to note this on the application forms. If they are of a smaller size and are for personal use only then permission will not be required.

If you are ever unsure, many building companies have a garden planning permission service. In cases such as this they will contact your local authorities themselves, present the plans and work to obtain any permissions or certificates required.

Always speak to your local authorities as a first port of call as they all have a department that deal with such planning queries as a day to day task, so if anybody can advise then it will be them. The process can be time consuming and stressful so do take any additional advice given to you, it is only there to help.
