Section 8 is a brand new first person shooter game that is so confident in what it offers that it has shrugged off the threat of the bigger boys on the block, namely a new Halo and new Call of Duty game, to launch at the same time as them.

Section 8 includes a big, bold multiplayer element. It can support up to 42 players on the PC and 32 on the Xbox 360, though the use of X-Servers, a first for the console.

There is only one mode in Section 8 - red versus blue team, but it does include a tactical way to enter the game, using a battlefield overview that shows you the enemy strongholds, and then offers to let you drop far out from the fire and work your way in, or risk it and drop closer by. This eliminates the spawn camping that spoils so many multiplayer games.

Care has also been given to the other "things that annoy gamers" such as pogoing and dashing out the way, with cooldowns on gameplay elements like Overdrive (super-speed), and also to the "things that gamers love" such as really big guns.

The game has solid graphics, running as it does on the Unreal Engine 3, so while there are better visuals out there, Section 8 is by no means let down by its look. If the game can continue to attract the level of gamers that it has done so far then online games will continue to retain their fast pace, and the game will be a success.

The single player game explains the moniker of the title a bit more: Section 8 is the military term for soldiers discharged for mental issues. In this game your team is nicknamed Section 8 because of its crazy attitude to jumping into dangerous situations.

Section 8 is out September 11th 2009 and is available for both PC and the Xbox 360.
