The serious scrapbooker is going to have an equally serious supply of bits, bobs, goodies, knick-knacks, and tools for the creation of the perfect page. This isn't your third grade art class collage - scrapbooking has risen to a fine art, and artists need the right materials and tools to craft a masterpiece. But there's the danger that you'll drive your family into living out of a single room, as the rest of the house is overtaken by the stuff of scrapbooking.

Equally as troublesome as the amount of supplies you've collected, is the amount of time it takes to gather them up and lay them out just for one, single scrapbooking session. If you factor in looking for the one or two items you know you want, but just can't put your finger on when you need them, you can easily spend 15 or 20 minutes setting up to start working, time you could have spent in the much more fun and productive task of creating beauty.

You might want to learn how to scrapbook, digital style. Sure, scrapping the old-school way is still fun, but for a change of pace, how about creating your pages right on your computer, where all the tools and supplies you need are tidily stored and right at your fingertips? Digital scrapbooking is becoming hugely popular, and rightly so.

Don't let your modest computer skills intimidate you away from learning how to scrapbook digitally. Online scrapbooking is just as much fun, and it's easy to learn. Follow a few simple steps, and suddenly you'll find it took less time to learn than it did to set up for a single session of scrapbooking the way you did it before. Free up some time to spend with your family, or start another digital scrapbooking project!

First, find out how to get your scrapbook pictures made digital. If you use a digital camera to take your pictures, it's easy to transfer them to your computer. But if you have some hard copy photos that you want to use, or aren't sure how to transfer your digital photos to your computer, it's a simple matter of putting your pictures on a CD, which can be done at any photography center. While there, you can also scan your pictures, adding those to the CD as well.

That's not all there is to learning how to scrapbook using digital means. There are many photo sharing websites where you can register and begin exchanging pictures with other people, family and friends. The ultimate in digital scrapbooking is using (sometimes-free) photo-edition software to make artistic alterations to your original photograph, which adds another interesting element to your page. But if you're a beginner, don't worry about that. Once you have your photos on your computer, you're perfectly ready to make a lovely scrapbook page.

There are many excellent and inexpensive digital scrapbooking software programs on the market right now. Just do a search for "how to scrapbook digital" or "digital scrapbook software" and check out the choices. All of them will help you design, edit and print your pages, and most offer a ton of customizable themes, background and graphics options built right in to help you get started. Be sure to do your homework - compare prices and services before making a decision, so you know you'll be getting the program that's right for your budget, skill level, and needs. Once you've made your choice and bought or downloaded your perfect software, be sure to read through the tutorial and familiarize yourself with how it works and what it's capable of, as this will save you a lot of time fiddling around trying to figure stuff out when you'd really rather be making your page.

Once you've learned how to scrapbook, digital-style, you'll discover a lot of options that paper and cloth scrapbooking don't provide, like being able to add audio, voice narration, and music, posting your scrapbook online so everyone in your family can see it, even if they can't travel to your home. Fix scratches and "red-eye" in your photographs with the click of a button, and change your mind about your design in an instant, without having to waste expensive supplies.

But the most priceless thing is the sense of security that digital scrapbooking gives. If something awful happens to your hard copies, you are safe in the knowledge that you have a fall back plan - everything is online, where you can print it out whenever you need to.

Take your scrapbooking in a whole new direction. You don't have to give up the tried and true (and fun!) way of building a scrapbook. But exploring a new option that gives you tons of alternatives that you can't get with traditional methods could give your scrapbooking passion a real shot in the arm.
